About the Get Fit GP Health Initiative
The city of Grand Prairie and community partners partnered to present Get Fit Grand Prairie– a city-wide wellness initiative connecting residents to local resources for improving health through physical fitness and healthy food options.
Started in January 2014, the Get Fit GP program presents tools, tips, and local resources through its website to help residents of all ages get up, get out, and get fit. The website highlights certain topics each month, encouraging residents to participate in activities hosted by the city and its partners.
According to a 2008 community health assessment by Dallas County, the three leading causes of death in Grand Prairie are heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease. To combat this data, the city set out to encourage all children and adults to benefit from improved food choices and increased physical activity that helps reduce risks for future health issues. For those interested, there is a monthly Get Fit GP health pledge that helps one set goals. Participants can also sign up for the Get Fit GP monthly email for fitness opportunities.
